WEEKEND - ****
[capsule.]
Intimate, truthful and brave, Andrew Haigh’s “Weekend” is one of the best films about love, sex and romance I’ve ever seen. It may also very well be the best film concerning a homosexual relationship ever made. The performances and the writing are so well done, so natural and non-mannered, that the film in large part feels like a documentary, and it’s a pleasure to experience this sort of freshness and originality and truth in an independent film. Most would place this picture into the category of “queer cinema.” I, however, would place it right alongside the best of all cinematic romances, all cinematic love stories - gay or straight or whatever else. The sexuality of the players/characters/writer-director need not apply - this is a heartbreaking, truthful love story, and it’s a magnificently well-crafted piece of cinema. Grade: A+
